The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is the “go to” qualification for anyone wanting the basic skills, background knowledge and confidence needed to drive a powerboat safely. It also enables the holder to obtain the International Certificate of Competence Certificate (ICC). The ICC is an almost universal requirement for chartering abroad.

This course is run from our training centre in Haslar Marina. You will spend time in our onsite classroom looking at key topics such as basic navigation, pilotage, and collision regulations. But the aim is to spend as much time afloat as possible. Our location right inside the entrance to busy Portsmouth Harbour provides ample opportunity to practice close quarters boat handling. This will include coming alongside, slow speed and confined space handling, mooring buoys and, of course man overboard recovery.

We’re just minutes away from the Solent where driving at planing speed and high-speed manoeuvres can be taught in open water. The Powerboat Level 2 is an excellent all-round confidence-builder. Whether you’re planning to do high speed day trips with friends, or simply exploring rivers further upstream with the family, this course equips you with skills and knowledge needed to be safe and fully enjoy your time on the water.

Course Outcomes
  • As holder of the certificate, you should be able to safely handle and operate a power boat up to 10 metres LOA in various states of wind and tide in confined spaces and open water.
  • You should be able to plan and execute simple passages in daylight hours.
  • You should be able to deal with emergency situations such as MOB recovery.
