RYA Coastal Skipper Practical

The RYA Coastal Skipper course is for those who feel it’s time to push the boundaries a little further. For many this course is a natural progression from Day Skipper. So, for example, if you’ve been in charge for a family and friends holiday afloat, or perhaps you spent your summer in your own home cruising grounds practising and developing your knowledge and skills, Coastal Skipper may well be the next step  for you.

The Coastal Skipper course takes you further afield – weather-permitting, away from familiar territory. It will help to develop and test both your skippering skills and your knowledge. It digs deeper into the art and science of passage planning, pilotage, weather forecasting, and preparing and running a boat for more extended periods at sea. You will be introduced to concepts such as watch-keeping and dealing with adverse weather. And of course, you will find time to practise and improve your boat-handling skills.

N.B. We require that all students under 16 are accompanied by an adult. If you are 16 or 17 and wish to book the course unaccompanied by an adult, please contact our office to discuss whether this would be suitable.  

Course Outcomes

• A Coastal Skipper has the knowledge to skipper a yacht safely and confidently on extended coastal cruises, but not necessarily the experience needed to undertake longer offshore passages.
• (NOTE: Certification does create a potential pathway to the RYA Yachtmaster ™ Coastal and Offshore examination. Please ask for more details).
