Boating is best enjoyed when you can make informed and confident decisions about where to go, when to go and how best to manage your vessel for the enjoyment and safety of all. The RYA Day Skipper theory course provides a comprehensive introduction for all would-be skippers and navigators whether sail, power or motor.
Specifically designed to equip you with the core theoretical knowledge, skills and confidence this course will help prepare you for the RYA Day Skipper practical qualification.
In the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course students are taught the basics of coastal and inshore navigation. Key topics include:
- Charts and chart work
- Pilotage
- Meteorology
- Position fixing
- Shaping a course
- Dealing with tidal waters
- Use of electronic navigation
- The International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea.
As well as navigation, this course will give you an understanding of different boat types. We will also explain nautical terms, and discuss the safety equipment typically carried onboard a boat.
The course will take place in our dedicated classroom at our RYA Training centre based at Haslar Marina.
Course Outcomes
- Following successful completion of an assessment, a RYA Day Skipper Theory certificate will be issued.
