The RYA Radar course is a 1-day course, no previous experience required! Radar is an invaluable aid for navigation and collision avoidance but it is only useful in the hands of a knowledgable operator. Developments in marine electronics mean that radar has once more become a very common feature of small craft integrated systems. Modern small-craft radar has moved on from the time-consuming and complex days of plotting sheets and screen overlays, and in many ways, it is intuitively easier to use than in the past.

Although modern small craft radar is, to some extent “plug and play”, the correct and appropriate use of any radar device continues to be a function of sound knowledge, thorough understanding and a very clear recognition of the way the collision regulations (IRPCS) affect both our use and interpretation of what our radar is telling us.

Most people still think of radar as a means of assessing the risk of collision in reduced visibility. But in truth, this is only part of the story. Many are also aware that if radar is fitted on their craft, the regulations state it must be used. But how many are using it appropriately? Could misuse actually increase the risk of collision? And if they are not using it appropriately, or even at all, in a court of law, would they be able to defend their position? These are important considerations.

The course will take place in our dedicated classroom at our RYA Training centre based at Haslar Marina.

Course Outcomes
  • A greater understanding of what radar is, how it can be made to work best for you and when it is most appropriate.
  • How to comply with the collision regulations.
  • How to use Radar in combination with other tools to keep your vessel safe
  • A brief assessment will lead to certification.
