The RYA training schemes are designed to help you progress from novice all the way to the point of joining the ranks of professional skippers. All RYA courses offer certification, so you can build up your experience, knowledge and credentials in the way that suits you best.

Professional Skipper Training

Are you ready to set sail on a fulfilling career in the maritime industry? Our Professional Skipper Training (PST) programme is designed to take you from novice to a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore in just four months.

Duration: 4 Months
Gold DofE Expedition

Embark on the ultimate Gold DofE Expedition and take your sailing to the highest level! Over six days, you’ll complete either your RYA Competent Crew or Day Skipper qualification (depending on prior experience) while fulfilling both the practice and qualifying expeditions required for your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Silver DofE Expedition

International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

The ICC is a certificate which may be issued to anyone who has successfully completed a national boating license or has passed an assessment to prove the required competence for operating pleasure craft.

Duration: 1 Day Assessment
RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) (Online)

The marine sector is highly regulated and governed by complex legislation – much of it derived from international treaty as well as government agencies. The RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) (Online) course helps you to navigate through the key areas of the regulations as they apply to you, taking you to vital information sources and bringing the regulation to life with case studies and exercises. It is an interactive course, with an assessment at the end.

Duration: Approximately 8-10 hours
RYA Marine Radio SRC (Short Range Certificate) – (Online)

RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equipment on a UK flagged vessel.  

Duration: A minimum of 10 hours self-study
RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship (Online)

This course is the perfect introduction to those who are new to boating and want to equip themselves with a basic knowledge of navigation and safety.

Duration: A minimum of 18 hours self-study is recommended
RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster ™ Offshore Theory (Online)

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster™ theory (Online) is an advanced course that builds on the knowledge gained at the RYA Day Skipper Theory level.

Duration: Approximately 50-60 hours study, 5 hours assessment (can be done in 3 parts)
RYA Day Skipper Theory (Online)

Boating is best enjoyed when you can make informed and confident decisions about where to go, when to go and how best to manage your vessel for the enjoyment and safety of all. The RYA Day Skipper course provides a comprehensive introduction for all would-be skippers and navigators whether sail, power or motor.

Duration: Approximately 40 hours study with a 2 part, 2 hour assessment
RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster ™ Theory

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster™ theory is an advanced course that builds on the knowledge gained at the RYA Day Skipper Theory level.

This is a 6 day course that includes an assessment at the end. It is open to anyone, but is most likely to benefit those who have already completed their RYA Day Skipper Theory, and have some practical boating experience

Duration: 6 Days
